Rob McShane

Bio: So, I'm living with MS and a brain that malfunctions at the drop of a hat! One never knows what might pop out next....:) Life is certainly interesting and different -how to learn to be flexible... Apart from the odd poem, which I will share for fun, I've taken to watercolour painting. For someone who could not draw a stickman, this challenges my brain thereby stimulating neuroplasticity, creating new nerve pathways and, sometimes, even produces something worth looking at...:) Great fun. Thanks for stopping by , and I do hope you enjoy whatever spills from my brain.

  1. Rob, it’s good to meet you and read your story. My health limits me also, but WordPress is a lovely place to share our love of reading and writing, two gifts I fear youngsters are hearing less and less about in their school days. Keep the joy!

  2. Chronic, severe illness does give us a unique perspective. Your favorite medications made me laugh. Mine are similar: coffee, tea, chocolate, French cheeses with good bread, ice cream, and good imported beer! Not always in that order. 😉

      • Thanks for visiting and stopping to chat! No need to apologise! Two posts on my page? – better than one!! 🙂 🙂
Yep – illness, like many other things in life, definitely gives us a unique perspective!
I’ll join you with the french cheese and good beer as well! 🙂 Do miss the English beer – we do have good beer in SA but not like the good ol’ British ale! Which beers do you enjoy the most where you are? You’re in the States, yes?

        • Yes, I’m in the States. Here in the Los Angeles area we have access to many excellent beers. The Craft/Microbrewery beer industry has grown tremendously in California over the last 10 years or so, and the beers from the Microbreweries tend to be excellent. In addition, because we are a large urban area, we have access to many imported beers and ales. Britain’s Newcalstle Brown Ale is one of my favorites. We also are fortunate to have access to delicious French and Italian cheeses. Life can be good. 😉

  3. We seem to have a great deal in common. If you replace cold water for coffee(can’t do caffeine), and Amaretto for red wine, we are definitely on the same wavelength. Oh, and my daughter was diagnosed with MS about six months ago. It’s quite an adjustment. I forgot to leave a comment yesterday, so decided to do so today. Hope to see more of you during this month of madness,

  4. Hi Rob,
You won’t believe this! Or maybe you will! My writing tutor is in for a treat on Friday as I have found your book! So I will soon have two. Where I found it is the unbelievable bit! I buy my clothes online and what doesn’t fit or I don’t like I return. I started to pack a couple of items to send back this morning, and there in the bag was your book!!! I have absolutely no idea how it to there but I just burst out laughing when I saw it!! Just been reading it and love it. Im sure my writing tutor will too.😊

  5. Rob, you inspire me, that in spite of the MS you’re able to be so productive with your writing and that you’ve published so many books. I don’t have MS, but another debilitating health issue caused by a defective gene which leads to severe fatigue and chronic pain, which leads to chronic writer’s block! But those like you, able to overcome the odds and continue to write so creatively give me hope. Thank you for your good cheer, and your uplifting spirit!
What I’ve read so far on your blog is wonderful and I’ll try to be back very soon to read more. I hope you have as many good days as possible!
    All the best to you,
    Betty

    • Thank you Betty- your words now inspire me! My only goal with my writing (other than the enjoyment I get from playing with words!) is to provide a spark of inspiration/thought/entertainment for others. Your kind words mean so much! I must add that, often, focussing on my writing helps to take me away from whatever is going on with the body in that day – except the fatigue, of course! 🙂
Sorry to hear your health also problematic and do wish you many sunny, pain free days! Thankfully, we are so much more than our bodies – this shines through in your writing! 🙂
Thoughts with and loads of smiles 🙂 🙂
Thank you again and feels great to have ‘touched in’!
Look forward to seeing you as and when you’re able and reading more of your writing too.
      Take care
      Rob

  6. Hi Rob,
Hope your MS is going okay. I have an auto-immune disease called dermatomyositis and I used to have blood transfusions of IVIG for 5 years before it stopped working and now I’ve switched treatment and back in remission again. I have written a lot of poetry but not so much lately. Take care and best wishes,
    Rowena

    • Hi Roweeee – many thanks for your visit, comment, like and follow – much appreciated! Sorry to hear you also have an autoimmune issue but glad you’re in remission! 🙂 The MS affects my daily life – walking, fatigue, etc. etc.! – especially as we’re in the throws of high summer here! Knocks me flat sometimes (can’t afford aircon!) Will go check your blog when I have a few moments…chat soon! 🙂

      • Hi Rob,
Which country are you in? I’m in Australia so I’m at least with you in terms of the heat. I am better in the heat than the cold, especially as I also have Reynauld’s. A lot of my symptoms, particularly before I was diagnosed and started treatment were similar to MS. I broke my foot which set me back but it’s going to take me awhile to get this sorted because, as you would appreciate, with us a broken foot ceases to be a broken foot. I bhroke my foot after many sprains, which may or may not be connected to the DM but the physio is very encouraging. She’s talking about reprogramming the nerves in my foot through these simple but repetitive exercises but I imagine it’s going to take longer for me to really feel stable on both feet especially on uneven ground. The boot is currently my friend.
I can empathise on the financial front. I have no income at the moment and the family finances fall on my husband’s shoulders. I just seem to involve more and more debt. Hope you have a great day. I’m off to the physio. xx Rowena

I am in Pretoria, South Africa. So, we have a time difference! 09h15 here now (I am a late riser most days! Depending on spasms! 🙂
Sorry to hear about your foot – do hope it mends as quickly as possible – keep up the exercises!
My email is: robmcshane7@gmail.com if you would prefer to chat there than on here?
Hope you have had a good day! Enjoy the rest.

    • Thank you! I haven’t read the Way of Peaceful Warrior but will go look. Hope it changed your life for the better! 🙂
I would be so humbled and happy if my writings helped anyone in any way for the better, no matter how small!
We each touch each other and are changed in some way, don’t you think? Wouldn’t it be great if we all help each other for the better? Utopia rules! 🙂
